About The Hay Art

What started as a few crooked hay bales in the early ’90s became one of Alabama’s most unique roadside attractions. Jim Bird first used misshapen bales to create a surprise sculpture for his wife, sparking an idea that grew into a field of larger-than-life creations.

Jim was known for making the hay creatures from whatever was already around the farm, and he rarely spent more than five dollars on one. The Tin Man was the exception, only because he ran out of paint.

Today, visitors can enjoy giant sculptures made from hay bales, recycled farm equipment, and found objects. Favorites include the towering Tin Man, Snoopy and the Red Baron, animals, vehicles, and many other imaginative designs. New pieces have been added over the years, so each visit can bring something new.

The hay art blends creativity with farm life, giving old equipment and supplies a new purpose. Each piece reflects the imagination, hard work, and sense of humor that became part of the Bird family tradition.
