About Jim Bird

James “Jim” Bird (1927–2023) was a farmer, engineer, artist, storyteller, and lifelong creator who called Forkland, Alabama home. He spent much of his life raising cattle, building businesses, restoring historic buildings, and serving his community. Whatever he was doing, Jim brought curiosity, creativity, and a sense of humor.

In the early 1990s, a few misshapen hay bales inspired Jim to create his first hay sculpture. What began as a simple project grew into a collection of larger-than-life creations. Using hay, old farm equipment, scrap metal, and found objects, he turned everyday materials into imaginative works of art that brought smiles to visitors from around the world.

Jim never considered himself a traditional artist. He simply enjoyed making things and sharing them with others. Over the years, more than 80 creations appeared on the farm, each reflecting his resourcefulness and playful spirit.

Beyond the hay art, Jim was deeply involved in the community. He helped lead Demopolis’s Christmas on the River celebrations for decades, restored historic landmarks, supported local traditions, and was known for his gift of storytelling. Friends, neighbors, and visitors were drawn to his warmth, quick wit, and ability to make people feel welcome.

Today, Jim’s legacy lives on through the hay art, the places he helped preserve, and the many people he touched. His family continues to care for the sculptures and carry forward the tradition he began.
